why didnt the hi limit blow?

one of the heating element coils drooped and was touching the metal causing the heating element not to turn off, as long as the dryer was in the on position even when it wasnt running. it got so hot it melted the rear panel. my question is, why didnt the hi limit blow?

The limit measures ambient temp not amp draw. Since the electricity is traveling from L-2 to earth their is no loop and even though the element is hot it can't increase in temp due to the resistance from the frame. It will get hot enough to melt or warp stuff however. That is my theory, I may be wrong, if I am someone will post a comment.

The Thermal devices are in the L1 line ...
whether they "open" or not, when the Heating Element shorts to chassis, it's still powered by the L2 line.

Yes of course L-1 (I stand corrected) would go through the timer side of the circuit whereas L-2 is blocked by the cent switch. You are on your toes Reggie!

I've seen this happen a lot...seems like the designers would include (yet another) safety to switch out the L2 side when the element grounds. BTW: this is why I never leave the house while my dryer's on.
