Kenmore Washer won't spin consistently.
« on: March 26, 2010, 06:18:25 PM »
It spins most of the time but once in a while you have to grab the tub by hand, move it slightly clockwise (you hear a click), then it will spin.  Any ideas?  The coupler looked okay, but I'm not ruling that out completely.  It's the inconsistency that concerns me.

thanks,
rick...

This manual shows how the innards of the neutral drain transmission works. The spin pawl will actually start to get smashed down with age. That could cause intermittent spin, also the main drive gear is plastic and tends to get a flat spot on it overtime.

Thanks JW!  That sounds like a definite possibility.  I can't seem to find the replacement parts for the innards of the transmission, just the complete assembly.  Is it possible to get those parts?

thanks again,
rick...

Thanks again JW!  If I decide to tackle this project, do you have the main drive gear too?  I'll certainly order from here if I attempt this!  Do I need any special tools?

Can't find the main drive gear.  Was told by "live chat" that if it is inside the transmission, I can't get it.

Have you had the cover off the tranny? It's the 1st and biggest thing in there. That big white thingy. Note: The spin pawl and other things are under the main drive gear so be
careful when removing it not to disturb the parts beneath when you inspect. You are looking for 2 things The outer portion of this main gear smooth and worn down in spots and the spin pawl smashed down. The new gear comes with a new pinion also. The pinion is on the shaft.

No, I have not taken it apart yet.  I would like to have all the parts on hand so I only have to do it once.  We have two kids at home and can't be without a washer for long!  Do you think it would be saft to just order the neutral drain kit?  Or should I replace the main drive gear too?  (If I can find it)

Gear and pinion

Neutral drain kit

Tip: when replacing the neutral drain kit don't use those plates provided. 2 reasons: Use the wrong plate and you're screwed and if you take the original plate off you might knock it out of time and you don't want to do that.
