Magic Chef MCBR445SO498 Fridge won't get cold
« on: February 26, 2010, 10:27:10 AM »
My Magic Chef Fridge stopped working on me. The compressor is Super Hot but will not turn on. I have read a lot about the Relay, how do I test it with an Ohm Meter? Where do I purchase this PTC Relay if it is Bad?

Thanks,
Charlie

The exact Model is MCBR445S, sorry.

I found the part on Magic Chefs Parts Site but how do I test the Relay before I spend $24 on the Part?

You can have power to and through the relay and it still be bad. Reading power is one thing. The relay under a load(amp draw) will still be bad.
The compressor will have to cool off before it will start even with a new relay.

I keep a hard start in my tool bag. I remove the relay and connect the hard start up t the compressor. The HS has a cord on it. I plug that into an outlet and check the amp draw. I listen to the compressor watching the ammeter needle. Most of the time the ammeter will jump to around 6 amps then drop to half amp or a little better if the compressor is good. I try to replace the exact relay if I can but if I can't I just install a hard start device.

Just wanted to update everyone. I ordered the PTC Starter Relay and installed it over the weekend. My fridge is now ice cold and back up and running.

Thanks.
