Top or Front loader? Need some help deciding from expert wrenches.

Hi there, new to the forum, but have used the info in the past.  I didn't see any way to search the site for a question like this, but if you could help I would appreciate it.  My top loading kenmore is getting old and it sounds like the direct drive transmission is about to whirl its last.  Should I replace it with another top loader or be looking at a front loader?  If a front loader, which brand or model would you recommend?  I can do some minor repairs myself, (I am a retired refrigeration mechanic), but wanted something reliable.  You guys are the best source as you actually get to see the machines in the field.  Thanks in advance!

Thanks JW for the advice, I have had to replace two timers, one drive coupling and replace one of the large tub mounting springs on this thing, buy maybe you are correct, I need to just keep fixing it.  Your video's are great, but I guess I'll have to wait until it completely stops working to troubleshoot it.  It is making a raw-raw-rawing sound in agitate and a high pitched whine when spinning.

That might be the main gear inside the tranny, very easy to replace.

Okay, will check it when the washer stops washing or until the noise gets unbearable.  Thank you again for your reply and help.

Today, the washer started making noise too loud to continue running it.  I removed the cabinet and jumped the lid switch.  Nothing looks like it is broken or missing.  It sound like gears grinding and banging when it tries to spin.  It agitates okay and does not make any loud noise.  Any ideas what part is causing the problem?  Thanks for your help.

Is the drive coupling ok? Have you removed the motor and removed the coupling?

Motor coupling is good.  Just a little wear on the motor shaft arbor part of the coupling, but nothing to make all of the noise.

You gonna have to go deeper then. Keep in mind nothing is difficult to repair or replace on this washer.

It looks like some of the more expensive parts inside the tranny are about $80.  If you think the tranny repair is going to cost $100 or so for parts, I may junk this one and buy a new Whirlpool top direct drive. Local they are $400.   I live in Spanish Fort, I see you are in Mobile.  I can't remember a colder/wetter winter.  Thanks for all of the replies.

You can go to Buddy's appliance in Theodore and buy a used transmission for $40. I might have one out in my junk. If I do you can have it.

Appreciate the offer, and I may go to buddys sometime, but my wife was tired of the laundromat. so I bought a new WP direct drive top loader.  I am going to try to repair the old one for my son who is in college in Auburn.  I will post back when I get an opportunity to swap out the transmission. It was a good machine.  I hope I won't regret not getting a front loader.  The top loaders look like a dying breed.  Again thank you for your help.
