Maytag Atlantis Not Draining or Spinning
« on: February 25, 2010, 09:51:49 AM »
I am having this same issue mentioned in this topic with my Maytag Atlantis washer.

The timer advances through all the cycles to the end but the machine fails to drain in both the rinse and spin cycles. This results in the washer spinning in both cycles with a tub full of water.

This is very hard on the belt/ motor and you can smell the belt burning because of the weight of the water that will not drain. In every case there is a full tub of soapy water when the load is finished. However, when I then turn the timer back to the rinse or spin cycle and pull it out the water is pumped out as it should have been during the initial wash. This also works if I happen to catch it during the initial wash. In this way I know there is nothing wrong with the pump assembly.

The washer advances through all the cycles despite the fact that their is no proper drainage in the initial cycling. I have already tried replacing the timer, pump assembly, and lid switch to no avail. Can someone tell me what else might be wrong?

Here is my theory, I have seen those pumps shift around and lock up.The bearing seperates in them sometimes and you can see metal. The weird thing is the pump won't leak at all!

I would pull the inner tub out to see if there is something between the two tubs.

First, the Atlantis, as well as all Maytags, spin while the tub is full. They do not drain first, rather they drain simultaneously with the spin. This is to keep  soil from re-depositing on the clothes as the water drops thru them.

You need a new pump, as the new style pumps have a special insert to make sure they begin pumping and do not suds-lock as in previous designs. The new pump comes with the insert installed in the intake.

They had 2 style of pumps for this machine, so click on the one that closest resembles yours for pricing and info.

Style #1- Original design

Style #2- On later models

I have replaced the pump assembly already and it did not help. Yes the machine does indeed spin w/ water in it. However, the water does not drain unless I manually push the timer button in and pull it out again (sometimes multiple times, sometimes I have to reset it in new position). Only then will the pump motor kick in and drain the tub. For some reason, the pump motor does not function in the original cycle without my messing with the timer. I'm assuming this indicates something is wrong with the pump motor???

The Atlantis model does not have a pump motor. The motor that spins the tub also turns the pump. Try pulling the drain hose out of the stand pipe to see what kind of flow  you get as the machine drains.

Well the question now is: Motor or Timer? If it was me I would try all the cycles. If the same thing is happening in all the cycles then I would replace the motor.

I truly think I would try a new belt first. The motor may be running already if the tub is turning, but if the belt is worn, may not engage the pump pulley. The pump relies on good belt tension to work properly.
