Maytag Thrust bearing kit
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:40:30 AM »
Today I replaced the thrust bearing in my Maytag Preforma washer.  I bought the Maytag kit #12002213.  Thought I would pass on what I ran into because my research for school showed this as a pretty easy fix, and we even did a practice machine today, Mine turned out to be a pain.

I tipped the machine back to access the pulley, removed the belt and disassembled the old pulley and bearing. It showed signs of heat damage, think this is why it was making noise.

When I installed the kit I couldnt get the clip back on that holds the assembly in place. I used the .032 washer to start with.  I took the agitater out hoping to get a couple of more millimeters from shaft freeplay to get the clip on, that didnt work.  I compared the pulleys, washers and clips, nothing stood out.  I measured the shaft on the pulleys and both were 16mm (sorry for the metric measurements, I worked for years using millimeters and its just easier for me)  I measured the E clips, the one that came off the machine and the one included in the kit were each a different thickness. The kit E clip was thicker than the one I removed from the machine.

I used the old clip and filed about 1 to 2mm's off of the new pulley shaft and it fit just barely, it was tight but the brake engauges and disengauges within specs.

I have ran 2 loads thru it and no more noise and no problems with agitate or spin and the slow spin it had has been eliminated...It flys now

I apply a dab of grease to the clip so it will stick to the washer. Then I insert a thin bladed screwdriver into the groove of the drive shaft to separate it, so the clip can be started. Once the clip is partially inserted into the groove, I use a fairly large chan-l-lock plier to squeeze it home. Keep ypur fingers out of the pinch zone!

I fudge a little using a claw. I stick the claw under the lip and gently ease the brake so I can get that clip on there. I have some repair photos you may want to look at HERE
