Dishwasher Rack Rust Problem

My racks are cracking and rusting. Does this pose any harm to the machine to run it with the rust issue? I looked online for parts and the racks are way over 200 for both rack replacements together. Is this a common Maytag problem, my brothers 2001 model has the same issue.
Thank You.

One guy I know simply took bolt cutters and cut out the rusted area painted the tips with epoxy paint, instead of paying all the money for them new racks.

About the icons: The beer is tip link, if a tech saves ya some money buy em a 6 pack. The small green square=personal message. The green dot is a link to my web page on appliance repair and other general BS I love to post. The letter sends me email and I wish I knowed how to do IM's without the IM lizards that pop up. Very annoying.

call around some local mom and pop appliance shops. I know at my dads store we had a bunch of racks laying around in the basement in good condition, and some new from field scraps. just a thought.
