whirlpool washer timer repair

I finally got a timer for my 9110.  My simple problem is how does the control knob come off the front of the panel?

If the timer is a plastic one: the knob is held on by the timer shaft. A black rod in the back goes through the shaft and spreads the tip and that holds the knob on.
To remove the knob you pull back the rod a hair. You have to flip the controls up to get to the back side of the timer. I have some videos HERE
