Kenmore Gas Dryer , no heat
« on: January 30, 2010, 11:44:02 AM »
Ignitor not glowing so I replaced it as recommended by parts store.  New one not glowing either.  Had noted while poking around that the thermal fuse, part 3392519, seemed to not have continuity ( could not get a teat light to light when attached to the fuse.  Parts store had told me it could not be the fuse as dryer would not run if blown.  Experimented and dryer motor runs fine with the fuse not in circuit.  Bypassed the fuse and ignitor glows.
There is a bright orange sticker near the fuse with instructions on what to check if fuse is blown but it is decayed and unreadable.  I can see it suggests two areas on a gas dryer.  Ideas?  What does the fuse control?  Can I test the controlled parts before buying replacements?  Am I on the right track?

If you bypassed a fuse and the dryer works correctly, replace the fuse.
No continuity confirms a bad fuse.

For what it's worth, my Kenmore 70 series dryer motor will run with a blown thermal fuse but it will not create heat.  I'd say you have a bad fuse.

On a gas dryer that fuse kills only the gas assembly circuit; the dryer will continue to run. On an electric dryer that fuse kills the dryer.

Great news,so I just need a fuse but is there a common reason the fuse blew?  As in, is another component faulty that I have to worry about?
And thanks for to JW for indicating that my parts shop guy isn't nuts, that on an electric model the blown fuse would stop the whole unit. dr

That duct fuse blows when their is an air restriction that rapidly raises the temp to 350f and usually indicates a clogged blower and filter, remember the fuse is judging drum air. So if the housing of the filter is clogged the air stagnates right there quickly. You need to completely remove the filter housing and wash it out. Or you will just continue to buy them fuses.

Thanks again.  I'll take apart the blower housing and clean it up, can't imagine it's not clogged given the conditions I found inside the rest of the housing. Collected over $12 in change from the dust on the bottom interior floor.

Ned I win some and I lose some, what can I say. I am glad you got er done. That other guy did not post a good model number and throwed my game off. The reason I didn't give him a definitive answer is because I knew the fuse does different things for different dryers and his model number was not giving me a clue. I learn as I go.

I know this is an old topic but with a little time spent searching I was able to fix my dryer for 15 bucks. Many thanks to the techs that give advice. I will return, hopefully not to soon.

This diagnosis was a perfect fix.
