Estate Washer shakes like craazy on spin cycles

The washer on the spin cycle has started to shake like crazy even when not loaded. I disassembled the washer and checked the suspension springs and all seem to be intact. Is it possible the springs have weakened and if I replace them the washer will work. Any other thoughts on what might be causing this?

Thank you for the additional ideas. Can you provide further direction on how to test the balance ring or what to look for in trying to determine if this is what is at the root of the problem?

The best way to test the balance ring is to place the empty machine in spin, then raise the lid after it is up to speed. When it comes to a stop, there should be a slight swirling or swishing noise from the top of the  spin basket. This is the hermetically sealed liquid which keeps it balanced. If no sound like this is heard, chances are the ring has lost its liquid charge and must be replaced. The ring simply lifts off the top of the spin basket after you depress two of the 3 tabs  around the edge.
