Maytag Performa - 1yr 4mo Old
« on: January 06, 2010, 01:26:03 PM »
Hello, I want to thank anyone in advance for even taking the time to read thit.  I have a Maytag Performa series top load washer that is just over a year old.  Up until this morning it worked great.  My wife went to throw a load in this morning, and the washer filled up with water and instead of the cycle starthing after the water filled up, the washer just hums, or buzz's.  Not like a done buzz like when the dryer is done, a buzz or hum like the sound you hear when you stand next to a flourescent light fixture, just a little louder.  I have baby cloths to was and I am a firefighter and need a uniform washed, and this is a very large bump in the process.  Thank you for any input.

Model MTW5740TQ0

First tilt the washer back a little and take the belt off and see if the motor will run by itself, if not that means your motor is bad. If the motor does run, then its possibly something stuck in the water pump, turn the water pump pulley underneath your washer, it should turn freely.

Can you put it in spin and drain the water out?

From the model # I think this machine is not a performa but a direct drive machine so no drive belt or large drive pulley . If you were washing small items like baby cloths one could be stuck in the pump . Your best bet would be to tip it backwards slightly find the pump (on the front of the motor with 2 hoses attached ) and check for a UFO .

I just looked up the model and this washer is a direct drive model. You flip up the controls just like the older models but there is no screws to mess with, only spring clips. The spring clips are under each end. Use a putty knife between the base of the controls and the top of the machine to release those and flip the controls up. Then you can pop the case off and get to the pump and motor.

Just as RAH52 JWWWebster mention,or you could till the washer back, remove the pump that way and put it
in spin cycle to see if it work. If it spins you have a clogged pump, other wise chance are you have a bad timer.
For 1 year old washer for the motor to go out is very rare, but extremely common for this plastic timer. we can
be more technical in wiring testing if you like.Try our suggestion and post it back let us know your result.

Yes, it is a direct drive, my apologies, This is the first Maytag I've ever seen that's a direct drive.
