I too am suffering from a loud banging noise (heavier loads) which recently started. This unit is 5 yrs old and has been a source of vibrating noises for some time. Until the other evening when it sounded like a helicopter was landing in the laundry room. If we lighten up the load its not so bad. After reviewing/reading others issues the common problems seems to be shocks, springs and the basket bearing.

Question, how do you know/inspect the shocks. Mine aren't broken, there doesn't appear to be any excessive amount of grease at the base. So, what do you look for? Based on my automotive/shock experience the design is primative i.e. a shaft in a tube with little absorbing properties.

Finally, the basket rear bearing, other than high spinning is there any other diagnosis? I do feel a bit of out of roundness of the drum driver pulley while spinning. Thanks for you input.

after some add'l looking it appears that the front outer tub AP3773840 has broken loose of the basket AP4459040. In doing so (i'm guessing) the basket is not stable under large loads. Is this correct?

If this is the Whirlpool Duet GHW9200 for example, you have a bad spinner assembly. The support spider has likely corroded out from behind the spinner or broken, causing the loud clattering. Keep using it and you will knock a hole in the outer tub. Time for a new spinner assembly. Fun project

That machine was made at least 8 years ago, but if you say 5 years old...ok.

which part is the round hard plastic attached to? around the basket and front outer tub there are a lot of small broken plastic pieces. one can see where damage has occurred due to loose fitting and spinning. Thanks

You'll find the Duet washer manual here on this forum to answer all your questions about how the machine goes together. From what you have disclosed, there may be too much damage to warrant a repair versus replacing the machine.

maybe, but the dryer matches so the cost could go higher if we prefer matching units. I understand the basket fits via the bearing/shaft in the rear tub. now the front of the basket, it appears this rides in the front tub not really attached. what i see is that there is no support for the basket so it bangs around. that's the damage i was referring to. i don't know how the front basket and tub fit together so i'm not sure if its the tub or basket. if the plastic i see worn is attache dto the tub ( i suspect) then the basket is the issue. if so, did that happen as a result of the tub bearing or just wear and tear? Nobody mentioned a tub bearing. You have a broken spinner basket support. See the following video:

When it broke, the tub flopped around, likely damaging the outer tub, which is a whitish plastic material. In this case, you can order a new tub kit along with the new spinner basket and then you will have a new machine (mechanically speaking). Keep in mind that you also risk other repairs later down the road which are not related to this issue, so  this is why I hesitated to recommend a great expense on your behalf. If you are comfortable with the prices you find on the parts, there's no reason you can't replace the tub as well as the spinner while you're in there. It's all going to have to come apart the same way anyhow. If it were me, I would start disassembling it to see just what was damaged and what was not. You can't use it anyway.

ok, what I didn't get was how the two joined/relationship to the plastic. i don;t have an issue with taking it apart just wanted to order what I thought would be needed. that way i could put it right back together. i'll disassemble and we'll see what's next. Thanks for your assistance
