Maytag Performa Dryer
« on: December 19, 2009, 04:16:31 PM »
I was recently cleaning the lint from inside of my dryer and put it back together it worked for a few hours then turned off on it's own...i started troubleshooting and found my Thermal Fuse was bad so i went out and bought it along with a new high limit switch. Installed it and the dryer ran for about ten minutes and then turned off again. What can be causing the Thermal Fuse to be blowing out? Im going to check it now and see if the fuse blew again. Any help is appreciated

Okay so i got the dryer to run again but i once it hits a certain temperature or runs for about 10 minutes it automatically shuts off. What can cause this?

Did you check the blower wheel? On this type dryer the plastic blower wheel strips out and gets loose on the shaft causing a lag in the air and making the element overheat.

Replace the operating thermostat located on the front of the blower duct. Be sure your exhaust is not kinked or restricted as well.

I will check out both items! Can it be a bad high limit switch? I replaced mine but it was still working?

The limit is doing its job shutting down the dryer. The problem lies with air movement

Air movement is only one possibility on the problem JW. Fortunately I have factory service experience with this model and know the usual causes of failures. The 4-way thermostat is the usual culprit, if no irregularities are found with the blower, vent, etc.

Maytag sent out a service memo stating to change the operating thermostat in the event of a thermal fuse failure. Standard protocol.

Thanks for all your help guys! I will start with the blower wheel and see if it has movement or seems stripped out. Then i guess i will check the thermostat at the duct and then the 4 way thermostat that you mentioned....Thanks again...You know the cost of the parts mentioned? Where is the 4 way thermostat located?

Dude, now you are 2nd guessing me...
There are 4 wires going to the thermostat regardless of how many terminals you can count on it, and if I expected you to test it first there would have been instructions to do so. Instead, the procedure is to replace that thermostat if the thermal fuse above fails, period. It has already been proven by factory testing that  one causes the other on this model. I gave you the part number and a link to get the part...the faster you replace it the quicker you will be drying properly again.

(provided of course that your exhaust system complies with the requirements on the label on back of the dryer...no foil, etc)

Well i ordered the part you talked about repair-man and the dryer is still shutting down before the cycle is over. I guess i will just buy a new dryer because i have replaced all the parts i was instructed to. I guess it's just going out.
