I'm working on a maytag refrigerator that stopped working for a friend of mine. Apparently, the freezer door wouldn't close and seal good unless it was pushed firmly. Well, she has three kids that didn't always pay attention to whether or not it closed good, so the coils would freeze up and she'd half to remove the panel in the freezer and defrost them with a hair dryer. She called me a few days ago and said that when she came home there was ice cream melted on the floor and the freezer wasn't cold at all. She unplugged it and left it over night, but it still wouldn't get cold after she plugged in it for a while. Well I plugged it in and the compressor gets hot but the coils in the freezer don't get cold. I hear a clicking sound every few minutes coming from the overload relay attached to the compressor. Also, is the thermostat supposed to be clipped on to the coils in the freezer, because it wasn't. I've read up on some other posts for this model and it sounds like a lot of people had to change out the defrost control board, which I might need to do, but would that keep the coils in the freezer from getting cold? Any suggestions on what to check from someone that has experience with this would be greatly appreciated.
