Loud clunking when the drum stops spining

This washer seams to work fine but if you open the lid during the final spin or at the end of the cycle the drum does not stop and makes a loud clunking sound then stops.Is there a break thats worn.I cannot get the whirlpool manual links to work.

Their is a guy out there in youtube land that swears you can grease up the brake package a little so the harsh torque action associated with opening the lid or end of cycle on some direct drive models will not be so violent.

It sounds like the tub block is stripped and is allowing  the drum to keep rotating where it rises and drops over the spin tube.

Can this often be repaired with just the drive block. To clarify the drum continues to make a few turns and bangs at the end of the cycle or stopping it by opening the lid.
Or would I possibly have to change the drive and brake

Try to turn the drum by hand you should feel it rise and fall if the block is stripped. You can fix this with a new tub block if the edges on the spin tube are still square.
