Series 80 Dryer Does Not HEAT

I have the Kenmore Series 80 dryer that will not heat.  Here is what I have done to track down the problem

1. Checked for 120/240 at the terminal board
2. Checked all the stuff outlined in other posts.

I found the heating element broken.  

Question: does it normally just break or does something else cause the problem?  The dryer is 3 years or so old.
