Agitator only spins one way

O.k. have a weird problem.

The agitator only spins one way (not back and forth like normal.) After a few minutes, it makes a grinding noise.

Took off the case (wasn't too hard), removed the pump and the motor. The coupling looked good (no breaks or tears.) Took out the agitator and checked the cams and they looked good. If I spin the agitator back and forth myself, it works.

Any ideas?

are you watching the agitator with clothes in the tub?

run the machine with only water

look down to the bottom of the agitator, you will see the bottom half is going back and forth, the top is spinning because the dogs in the ratcheting top are stripped

Just ran it and the bottom was gong back and forth and the top was spinning. 

I thought the dog ears looked good so the other parts might be stripped enough. 

Guess it is better than a new washer.
