the timer is sticking  do i just need to replace it or is it a censor

If the dryer is ok in timed dry then change this part:
appliance parts pros Part Number WHIRLPOOL AP2976290 - Thermostat, cycle 180
 Goes on the heater element at the base, has 3 wires one of which power that timer in auto when no heat is being called for by the control thermostat. Confused yet?  rofl

If your vent is restricted, the thermostat will cut out on hi-limit, causing power interruption to the timer motor. Try running the dryer with no vent attached to see if it still sticks before you start replacing parts.
