smelly dishwasher
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:13:36 AM »
just incase your machine developes a smell cause it sat idle,  etc

a very inexpensive cure is TANG, the powdered juice crystal
yes.... TANG
it contains citric acid, the active ingredient in the expensive cleaners
its not only cheaper, it smells better, and its definatly more enviromentaly safe, cause you can drink the stuff
so you could in theroy use it with a load of dishes, cause hey... they would taste like orange after  :)

Would this also work for front load washers that smell, or do they need a more powerful cleaner??

i wouldn't recomend it with washers, left over residue might stain clothes

for front loads stick with affresh front load cleaner

All remedies aside, if you don't stop the source of the odor, the problem will consistently recur and cost you money on  the remedies over and again. The best recourse is to locate the cause of the problem first. In 90% of the cases, this means raising the drain hose so that dirty water from the disposer does not  siphon back down to the unit. You'd be surprised how many dishwashers are installed incorrectly, with the drain hose coming in near the floor instead of at the top of the cabinet. Placing a loop in the hose and hanging it higher than the disposer  outlet will solve this in most cases.

FYI, Tang, Affresh and other remedies cannot kill the Salmonella and E.Coli germs which will give you hepatitis! It just makes the deadly germs smell good...

So what do we need to use to kill the germs in there? Bleach? I have read that bleach is bad for dishwasher parts/seals but for years all the dish detergents contained bleach before the enzymes took it's place.

Does vinegar kill the germs? How often should we run a clean out cycle? Does running the Sani Rinse cycle kill the germs and if so should it be used with each load or just every once in a while?

I have used the Dishwasher Magic before and seems like it says it disinfects but that might just be advertising?

I believe Dishwasher Magic is the best product. I give it to customers for free when I do a repair. Washer Magic is a good product also.
