kenmore refrigerator not cooling
« on: October 27, 2009, 01:09:55 PM »
I have older kenmore side by side door refrigerator that the reefer is not cooling[60degrees] but the freezer is working [20 degrees] also I noticed icing on the back wall of the freezer.I have cleaned the coils ,and made sure all fans are working . I couldn't find a actual m/n# or s/n# on this unit . Where would I find the defrost timer and how do I test it ?
The only info that I could find was a #22 on the door handle , I did find a sticker on the side of the door that showed it to be a soft touch 21.7 cu ft and at the bottom of the sticker in small print the #162d5331p004 .

Remove the rear panel of the freezer and get the ice out with a hair dryer. Check the heater for continuity.

The model number may be on the ceiling or wall inside the FF section. Also check under the lower crisper drawers on the wall.

I found the m/n# 363.951.2413 , also I defrosted the freezer with a heat gun and checked the defrost strips they both read 11 with digital multi- meter  . I also changed the defrost timer, I don't know if it was bad or not but I had a new one from another refrigerator .

When you have a defrost issue like this, it is a good idea to check the continuity of the defrost thermostat disc while the unit is still frozen. If it is open, the heaters will not come on even if the timer tells them to. Once you thaw the unit out and the temps go above 55 degrees the thermostat will open as designed, so check it while iced up.

I was unable to properly test it , there were no connectors to disconnect to isolate the unit . My plan is to go friday and remove the panel in the freezer and see if it working .

If that terminator(defrost disc) looks a bit swollen, it has failed. The only way to test it is to put it in a freezer and wait a few hour so that it will be under 25F.
Them terminator typically close contacts at 25f to allow for defrost heat and open at 50f to keep from damaging the ice box.

The disc did not look defective , but looks can be deceiving . My boss went by today and looked in the inspection hole in the freezer and said that the center coils were slightly frosty and the refrigerator was cool ,but he wasn't able to take the temp readings though. I'm not 100% sold that it's fixed although he is . Perhaps I can recheck Monday to find out for sure .
 Thanks Bryan
