Video: Testing - Connect and disconnect a push-in ice maker water fill valve

IMPORTANT NOTE: For no ice or low ice production, always confirm normal (0-5 Deg F) freezer temperatures before beginning diagnostic checks. The ice maker is designed not to run if the freezer in  not in this temperature range.

In this example I am using a ice maker water fill valve for a whirlpool side by side refrigerator.

The push-in fitting is a very common type of connection used on many different refrigerator water systems.

Disconnecting a push-in fitting

Shut off the water supply and depressurize the system. Push the collet (gripper) firmly against the fitting and pull the tube away from the fitting.

Connecting a push-in fitting

For a proper seal, all tube ends inserted into a push-in fitting must be round and free from surface damage.

To insert, push the tube firmly into the push-in fitting until the tube contacts the tube stop. When inserting the tube, one will encounter some resistance when the tube contacts the o-ring seal. Push the tubing through the o-ring seal until the tube contacts the tube stop. Pull on the tube firmly to verify it is secure. Turn on the water and check for leaks.



If your ice maker is not getting any water the fill tube could just be frozen shut.
Pull the refrigerator out from the wall and disconnect the power.
Follow the plastic water line that runs from the ice maker down to the water valve.
To be safe, turn the water to the refrigerator off.

Remove the water line (at the valve end) that runs up the back of the wall to the ice maker.
Put it to your mouth and try to blow air though it. It should always be open so you can blow air though it.

If you can not blow air though it then that is why you have no water going to the ice maker, the line is frozen shut and need to be thawed out. If the line is not frozen shut then you need to check the water valve with a ohm meter.

It should check around 200-300 ohms. If the valve is bad you will not get any reading, just as if you did not even have the meter connected to the valve. If you do not get any reading with the meter then replace the water valve.

Even if the valve checks ok with the meter it could still be plugged (not frozen) inside the valve or just stuck.

If everything checks ok with the valve, but you still don't get water then it is time to check the rest of the ice maker system to see if you can get water to run through the valve to the ice maker.

Make sure you reconnect the water valve and turn the water back on before testing the checking the rest of the ice maker system
