LG washer/dryer combo. Not spinning
« on: September 29, 2009, 05:57:40 PM »
Hi,
my LG WM3677HW washer/dryer stop spinning. I've got the LE error once.
Followed the unplugging, cleaning the filter instruction with no luck.

When I tried the spin cycle (or wash cycle) it seems that the drum is trying to spin, but it stops. I then hear a high pitch sound. Like if the motor is false spinning.
I know the washer does not have a belt so I wonder what this could be.

Any help would be greatly appreciate it.
I have a little baby and not having a washer is hard   :'(

The LE error is for a "locked motor" and can indicate a hall sensor among others.  How old is the unit?  If memory serves they have a long warranty period on the sensor.  While "trying to spin" does it just rock about an inch or two?

Hi PARTech,

The washer is about 3 years old.
Yes, when trying to spin, it only moves about 1 or 1/2 inch, and then all I hear is a high pitch sound.

I did not get the LE error again, maybe I wasn't patient enough to wait for the washer to give me the error. I've just got annoyed by the high pitch sound.

TIA.

That usually indicates the hall sensor or the rotor.  It either isn't getting the signal to switch fields or has a short in the rotor.  It would be worth it to check the connectors in the back as I have found some loose and read one of the threads here about a frayed wire to the sensor/rotor.  Otherwise do you have a volt ohm meter?

The 3 leads for the rotor should read between 5 and 15 ohms between any 2 of the three.

Thank you!
I do have a multimeter. I will check continuity and resistance.

I'll let you know what do I find out :)

Thanks again!

I measured the resistance and it's all 6Ohm (A-B, B-C, and A-C).
All cables seem to be OK.

I did noticed that the coils are a bit burned (melted plastic).

Also, I ran the spin cycle, and it seems that the motor just stops. I cannot even rotate it (it rotates freely when not powered) It also makes a noise (like metal squeaking).

Is the PWB Harness causing this? Shouldn't a faulty PWB Harness tell the main board not to spin the motor? Could the fault be at the Main board?

TAI.

That is a bad bearing. The motor is poling out.

The 3 leads for the rotor should read between 5 and 15 ohms between any 2 of the three.

If you got 60, then the rotor assembly is bad. Be sure your OHM meter was set to RX1

Hi,

I read 6 Ohms, not 60 Ohms.

How can I check for the bearing? So It is not likely the PWB Harness then?
Is the bearing inside? Do I need to take the Drum out?

TIA.

Forget the bearing. Not a possiblilty. Sorry it was mentioned.

If the motor OHMs are correct, the the RPS/harness is likely bad. (Rotor Position Switch). LG and Fisher/Paykel both have issues with this as well as the WP Cabrio.

But if the wire harness has good continuity it would be the hall sensor...
