Replacing the Maytag Water Pump 202203
« on: September 22, 2009, 03:07:45 PM »
Hi,

I'm new here.  I am a nurse and not a technician so here goes...

We have an old Maytag washing machine, model LAT5004AAW.  When it stopped working, I decided to try tinkering with it and I found a belt lying on the floor beneath the machine.  I ordered and replaced both belts.  They went on but were a bit loose as I was unable to find an adjustment screw.  I turned the machine on and it worked, but now the washer pump shoots out a steady stream of water when the machine is running (the impellers are spining inside the pump).  I ordered a new one and am waiting for the part.  Now, removing the hoses and the belts are the easy part, but, my questions are; how do I adjust the belts and how do I remove the old one from the machines frame.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Seth

There is a slight adjustment on the pump mounting base to tighten it a little. The motor carriage is spring loaded and adjust its' own tension.

The pump works in the spin cycle removing the water, in wash it rotates in the opposite direction and the water can't pump out because the pump forces the water back into the tub. The belt for the pump goes around the motor shaft. I dont understand why it would pump out in the wash cycle but it sounds like there is nothing wrong with the pump.

OK, I did it.  I turned the machine on it's side and loosed the water pump from the machine's base by removing 3 5/16" screws.  After removing the two hoses attached with hose clamps, the pump slipped right out and the new one went in just as easily.  I replaced the new belts that I ordered and the machine runs perfectly.  And to think I was ready to go buy a new machine.  I ordered the pump through amazon. com and paid less than half of what the other sites were asking.

Now, since I am in a fixing mood, my next task is to replace the ignition control module and coils for my Saturn.

Wish me luck

Seth
