Kenmore gas dryer Model #110.8318272, burner will not light
« on: September 18, 2009, 07:49:41 PM »
I have a Kenmore 80 series gas dryer.  Recently the burner stopped lighting.  I do not even hear a clicking sound which usually indicates the burner and gas valve are working and the igniter is bad.  Am I on the right track?  I really think it is the gas valve and not the igniter.  Thanks.

The click you hear is that holding coil that blocks the flow of gas when the gas assembly fires off. The sensor and ignitor or wired in series with each other with the coils. The coils themselves will not work because the ignitor hogs most all the current, when the bimetal inside the sensor gets hot enough then it opens and kills the power to the ignitor. The coils get  a rush of shocktricity and open. The gas flows out onto the blazing hot ignitor and Whoosh!!!ya has fire. That holding coil tends to get hot and quit with a little age. I don't think the coils are it I would say the sensor or the ignitor is bad. One way to check, is to grab the wires off the sensor and YOU be the sensor. With the dryer running hold the 2 wires together till the ignitor is glowing brightly and then seperate the wires. The gas should come out. Have somebody handy to unplug the dryer.

Check the parts with an ohm meter if you have one. Let me know what ya need (the ignitor or the sensor) and I will get ya a great price.

Hi Mr. Webster,
I have the problem with our neighbors gas Kenmore dryer. After a cool off period (unplugged), the unit will fire the burner for about 30 seconds then turn off the fire. It won't relight till the unit is unplugged for ~5 minutes or more then repeats the one light process. Intermittent is always a problem.
I looked at it this evening and found some things of interest.
There are 2 solenoid coils on the gas valve. One has 2 wires and the other 3 wires. When the unit is in the "failed" mode, the 2 wire solenoid coil is activated but when I do get a light, it is not.
The 3 wire solenoid coil only picks when there is a flame.
On the 3 wire coil, there is about 500 Ohms between the 2 outer pins with no resistance between the center pin and either of the outside pins. The connector has 3 wires.
Should there be continuity between all 3 pins of that solenoid? If so, about how much?
I have a good, glowing ignitor. After the one successful light, the system will retry about every minute or so. The igniter lights but the gas valve never opens, letting gas flow.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

replace both gas coils...279834 should be the part # for the two pack, generally if the ignitor sensor fails the ignitor wont glow, intermittent lighting or lighting at first then not lighting is a common symptom of bad coils.

Wow, that was fast. I will track down the 279834 solenoid coils and give it a shot. Reading here makes me think the 3 wire coil is going thermal and your reply is great to back that up. Cool that the coils are available as a replacement item and I won't have to replace the entire gas valve.
Thanks a ton for your help.

Parts on order from Amazon. Got both for $5.20 shipped. Those things are a lot cheaper than expected.

Not recommended to buy appliance parts from amazon or ebay, gas valve solenoids in particular. Iv'e heard numerous times about cheap junk coils from those sites. Iv'e heard of them being replaced two and three times and then the tech finally gets genuine Whirlpool FSP coils which finally fixes the problem. If your lucky, the coils will work and if your luckier still, they will last. The two wire coil should read about 1220 ohms, three wire between outer terminals (blk and wht) 560 ohms and between blk and blu should be about 1365 ohms (holding coil).

I agree and here is one example of a member having a heck of a time because of cheap coils.

Dang! Jumped the gun and bought/paid for them already. Well, I will give them a try since they have been shipped even. Thanks for the heads up that they probably won't work or last.
Also, thanks for the resistance readings of the coils. the 2 pin coil is good and on the 3 pin coil, the outer pins are good but the center pin is wide open. Sure explains why it wont stay lit.
Thanks again.

Well after jumping the gun and buying the non OEM coils, (as mentioned above), they arrived last Thursday and that got the dryer working again. So far, so good but I think we will need some luck in having them last. If further problems arise, I will go back with OEM parts at that time.
Thanks again for the help on this one. The resistance of the coils was right in line too.
