Loud GE Refrigerator

Sorry total noob here. I couldnt find an answer to this in the forum so I started a new thread.

I just moved in to this house that has a GE refrigerator (GTR17BBRFLWW). The unit has a VERY loud fan noise when the compressor comes on. I pulled off the back cardboard panel, the fan on the bottom (evaporator fan, i think) is the source of the loud noise. I then touched the compressor and it was VERY hot. I could barely touch it it was so hot.

Is this normal?

How can I fix it?

I need this thing to be quieter.

Actually I think might be the "compressor fan" not sure though.

yes after consulting the diagram it is a cond motor/fan that is making the noise. The fan is not rubbing on anything and the blades are clean and not broken.

So replace the motor...it is an AC/DC motor according to the diagram.

It does not sound like a bad motor. It sounds like the fan is spinning too fast or something. The noise sounds like rushing air not bad bearings.

What about the really hot compressor? Is that normal?

Would it still be a bad motor?

1. All compressors run hot to the touch
2. Fans are supposed to be quiet.

Great thanks for the info. I will replace the motor and see what happens.

I was just thinking that maybe there was something wrong the machine that would make the fan spin faster like a really hot compressor, but if it suppose to be hot then I guess not. I don't want to buy more parts then I need.
