Maytag Performa Won't Spin

Quick and to the point. I work on cars some but I don't know much about a washer. It's not spinning. No matter what cycle. Do I have a belt that could be broke...and where is that. Please help and thanks a lot!
I may add that I looked underneath and that belt is in place and functions.

When the washer is in the spin cycle does the motor run or is the washer just dead?

If the motor does not run during the spin cycle then I would check the lid switch to see if it is working.

your belt is on the very bottom
the pump may be the problem
lower the drain hose to a good bucket
to catch the water near the floor. no water comes out?
a sure sign something is in that pump. The water needs to be out so you can tip the washer to check the belt

the way it works it the motor turns one direction and the innards of the beast begin to agitate and cleanse the clothes the tub is locked down and does not move very much and the pump is pumping back into the tub so the water does not go out of the machine. It comes to a screaching halt and stands still it will not go furthur until the timer moves forward another click or so. Then the motor's polarity is reversed through the timer and the whole thang goes in the opposite direction the pump now pumps the water out,the spring that holds the tub is released by the cam riser mechinism on the main pulley, the tub begins to spin rapidly. The water is tossed outward and the clothes get dryed to point of damp dry. The motor comes to a halt the brake takes hold the tub locks up and the wash cycle is over.Why wont it spin? Locked pump. Lid open, bad lid switch, Motor froze, bad timer,pump locked up, Machine unpluged. Remove the belt and make sure the the pump turns easy both ways. Check the lid switch for continuity.Le sez le bon temps roule mon ami.
