Compressor Replacement?

I have a Maytag MFD2560HEW with a bad compressor.  It is about 4 years old and this is compressor #2.  I'm not a repairman but somewhat handy.  Is it difficult to change out?  Do I then have to recharge the system with coolant?

If it is too difficult to change, should I have it replaced for about $760?  

My wife likes the fridge and I really don't want to go out and buy a new one.

If you still have your manual, check the warranty.  Some of those had a 5 year on the sealed system.

Who charges $500 for a sealed system repair? The compressor lists for $242...

What kind of  rip-off artists do you have posing as repairmen there?

I'd call Maytag and raise Cain...their sealed system rate is $200 plus parts

Wow if I could get that kind of cash for a sealed system repair I'd be retired by now LOL . Either the guy is ripping someone off or he's quoting high hoping  he won't get the job .

Ok relax. use a mapp gass torch or better to remove the lines. get the old pump out and set the new one in. Weld the lines in. Remove the air from the icebox with a vacuum pump. When neg 30 is reached shut off valves and watch guage. If the needle stays all propah then SLOWLY charge the sysytem to 5 PSI. send me a beer

Yesterday I was working on a few appliance till the wee hours, by the time I got inside you could say that! I was multi tasking yesterday. I had my vacuum pump connected to an ice box pumping it down and I replaced a brake package and thrust washer kit on a maytag washer. My friend always brings me his tough jobs. LOL I made $15 enough fer a case of you know what. Then he helped drank it

Wow - alot of good advice.  Thank you all for your help.  I'm going to call a couple repairmen tomorrow to see the difference in their pricing.
