Noisey Washer
« on: July 28, 2007, 06:53:40 AM »
Maytag washing machine model A512 is noisey in agitaion/spin cycle. Works fine but noisey almost like a low rumble sound. Any ideas?

Hi jdman,

That could be the tub bearings making the noise. With the washer off grab the top of the agitator and try to wiggle the top of it back and forth. Is there much play in the agitator when you do this?

You could also remove the front of the washer and see if it looks like there has been grease flung around inside the cabinet. If there is it's time to replace the tub bearings and seals.

How old is the washer?

I'm guessing it's 6-10 yrs. old. The washer and dryer given to me. Also on model plate is series 04 and serial #100093VG

ok, from looking at the diagram and seeing what style washer that maytag is I would say they are over ten years old for sure.

Let me know what you find when you try to wiggle the agitator back and forth.

There are a couple screw towards the bottom corners on the front. Remove them and lift the panel out from the bottom and you will be able to see inside.

I see no grease at all. The agitator has a litle play in it but not much. Don't know for sure how much is suppose to be but it does wiggle a little

In feeling under side the pump belt feels to what I would say is a little loose. The noise doesn't sound like what a belt would make though

Try again with the agitator removed. There is a 1/4" screw on the side that holds the agitator on.

Yeah loose belts are normal on these washers.

The shaft is tight. When I move it the whole tub moves.

That's good then.

Next I would run the washer without the pump belt off and see if it still makes the noise.

If the noise stops it's something with the water pump making the noise.

Can you tell were the sound is coming from running the washer with the front cover off?

Sounds ok with the belt off. With front off it seems to be noisy in spin cycle. If I push in gently on tub during rinse cycle the noise stops. Of course if I push to hard it shuts down to the imbalance switch..

Sounds ok with the belt off.

If it sounds ok with the belt off then I would try a new set of belt and a water pump.

Here are the belts and pump for your washer.

If it's ten years old or older and you have never replaced the belts it's time for a new set anyway.

This part still makes it sounds like a noisy tub bearing.

Any chance you have a digital camera that does video clips?

Would be great if you could shoot a little clip of how it was acting.
