My AC unit keeps freezing up and blocking any airflow. I have read all the postings about clean filters, clogged coils and so on. I have replaced the filter and checked coils and they were clean. The problem of freezing up has gotten progressively worse since the weather has turned hotter this last week here on the East coast.

So I'm going to have someone come out and check the refrigerant level. My question is, what should I expect to pay for a technician to do this inspection? The local gas company want $165/hr plus $41.25 for each subsequent 15 minutes or any part thereof + cost of freon and/or parts. Seems excessively expensive to me. I going to call around to a few of the local hvac repair companies, so I would like to know a good ball park figure for this type of work.

Trane had some prematurely defective coils that would be about 10 years old now. That is probably where your leak is.
HVAC rates are widely varied. You should be able to find something lower than 165/hr. Most rates in my area are $100 or less with R22 about $30 per pound.

 Isn't there more than one filter?

The coil you refer to would be the coil inside the house ("A Frame" or heat exchanger) right?

And there is only one filter on the unit.

According to my paper work the heat exchanger has a 20 yr warranty and the compressor has a 10 year warranty. The system was installed in 2001, so if it is a problem with the coil at least I'll be covered for the part.

Maypo why don't you buy some gauges? Check the low side. should be around 68 PSI.

Yes, the "A" coil is the evaporator coil and is inside the house. It should be under the same 10 year warranty as the condenser sealed system.
