Maytag wont spin, agitate, or drain - also smell something burning

Wife said Maytag Performa Washer has been making noises and today it stopped after filling.  Washer won't agitate or spin and I can't get the water to drain.  There is a burning smell like the motor or something has overheated.  No matter what dial position/cycle I try I can't get it to drain.  In some positions it will start and make a humming noise for 15 seconds (near spin or rise starts) but then just stops and won't allow you to retry (pulling knob, changing position, and re-pulling knob does nothing) for 5-10 more minutes and then just does the same thing (slight humming then stops).

Chances are something got to the pump, causing it to freeze and therefore stalling the motor. Since everything is connected to a single belt underneath, removing the belt and isolating the pump so you can try the pulley in both directions would be a good start. See if the motor will then run without a belt attached to confirm if it is also a problem.
