Ge refrigerator evap fan noise

Hello ,The evaporator fan on this refrigerator is making a high pitched sound. The motor speed is up and down when this noise is going on. I understand GE had problems wih the motherboard on this refrigerator. Do you think the board is the problem or the motor?

Most likely a fan motor going bad.

You have been a wealth of help.  One last(hopefully) last question, our refirgerator (GE TFX20JRBK)did not come with a water filter but my husband thinks that we can add a filter to the water line and it will work.  I would love it if we can because the water has an awful taste.  Can this be done?

Yes you can add a inline filter. You should also be using copper tubing as a water supply. Not plastic.
