Washer doesn't spin
« on: August 06, 2009, 05:42:30 PM »
My washer doesn't spin. Maintenance guy said the spring was broken. Whirlpool tech said will cost me about $500 to replace the spring and maybe the base if that breaks while taking the spring out. So send him off.
I found the part online but am not sure if its the right one or even if its the part I need- Please advice!
Part Number: AP4358664 icon  ( from appliancepartspros.com )
Whirlpool washer model: LTG5243DQ6
Its a set of three springs for about $75.

I don't see how a bad spring would make the washer not spin.

What does the washer do when it gets to the spin cycle?
Can you hear the motor running at all during the spin cycle?

If you can hear the motor running during the spin cycle does the tub move at all?

No it doesn't move at all. Not sure about the motor making sound but it does nothing when it gets to the spin cycle.

If you can not hear the motor running during the spin cycle then the first thing I would suspect would be a bad lid switch.

The washer will not spin with the lid open. If the lid switch goes bad the washer will act as if the lid is open even when it is not.

As you open and close the lid you should be able to hear the lid switch click on and off. If you can not hear it clicking on and off then its bad and need to be replaced.

If you can hear it clicking on and off as you open and close the lid chance are it's good, but the only way to tell for sure at this point is to use a ohm meter to test it.

Open and close the lid a few times and listen for the clicking sound and report back.

I'll do that. Just out of curiosity, if the whirlpool tech came and saw it , and said it was the spring- was he wrong?

It's hard for me to say what the other technician seen when he was there. Maybe he seen a bad spring, but a bad spring will not make the motor not run during the spin cycle.

I have only seen them springs brake a couple times on the stacker units like yours. The ones I have seen go bad make the tub lean to the side. The washer would still spin with a bad spring, but the tub would bang against the washer cabinet as it ran in the spin cycle.

RegUS_PatOff is correct. Check to make sure it still agitates yet too.
