Here is a brief description of the problem.

Maytag Atlantis
Model MAV7200AWW
Series 19160323YZ
Style Y7909215

The machine will fill with water correctly, when the water flow stops there will be a humming sound for several seconds,  then the breaker switch for the room is thrown.

What is the cause of this problem?

Sounds like a motor or locked tranny.

I have removed the belt from the pulleys.  When I turn the selector to agitate or spin I hear a humming noise but the motor pulley does not turn.  Does this mean I definitely need to replace the motor or could there be another (hopefully cheaper to repair) problem.

Also, when I turn the pump pulley it feels a little rough.  It this normal?

Thanks for any help,

I may have 1 or 2 extra used motors laying around if you want to purchase one, the new ones are around $120 plus shipping.

...and a pump.

Thats what blew da motor :)

Don't buy used parts...we don't advocate it here. Motors that have been salvaged from other machines have sat around and atrophied to an extent and are a ticking time bomb

Yes definitely replace the pump too, if it is not spinning free.

Recycling good usable parts keeps them out of our landfills, that is what I base my business on. Not everyone has $150 bucks to spend on a new motor when they can get a used one for cheap that is guaranteed . For that price you  can get another used washer/dryer? I get junk appliances all the time. I assess the problem, see if is cost effective to fix, and if it is not I will strip it of all good parts and recycle them.

Also note that it is the same idea as the automobile junkyard. Everyone buys USED PARTS TO SAVE MONEY WHEREVER they can.

I don't blame you for trying to justify your existence, but buying used appliance parts is a gamble at best.  Atlantis motors has issues to begin with, so there's a damn good reason they ended up in the junyard. No doubt you and Fred Sanford make a good living scrapping what you can :)

If you really want to recycle things, take those motors to the scrap dealer and get paid so they can be melted back down and used to make new stuff. If old parts were worth re-selling, don't you think Sears and all the other greedy bastids would be doing it too?

There is a big difference between recycling and re-selling. Ebay is full of examples

A used appliance these days is way better than the new Mexitronic assed Chinese gadgetry with mandarin directions and Hong Kong prices. Washaman I like the way you think. A man after my own heart.
