OK, I just flipped it on it's back and all you need is a flathead screwdriver to remove a little C-clip. You can see this in the picture I took. You also see the white plastic dust from the snubber disentigrating.

Ok, tub is out and I stand corrected. As you can see in the pics I took a special tool is required to remove the brake assembly because the snubber is sandwhiched beneath it. So much for an easy job.

And it only took 20 minutes to remove, take pics, edit pics and repost.

Ok, just found this page with instructions for snubber replacement, and no expensive to is required, just longer screws for the housing.

The brake removal tool is better than 6 screws. But yeah I have heard of that screw method.

I still do not see what taking the brake off will do because the ring FLOATS between the base and the tranny mount. If I am wrong I wanna know.

It is located on the other side of the tranny, and it does not float. It is permanetly sandwhiched between the tub frame and brake assembly. The floating part comes in to play when the tub assembly is set on the base. Here are more pictures. I backed all the screws of just a hair to free it up and release the snubber. As you can see, the snubber is definetly shot. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the pictures. I have never replaced a snubber. So you just needed to back off the brake a tad because that tired ass snubber had worked its funky way up under that brake package right? Or was it mounted under the lip?

Yes, I had to loosen all the screws of the brake a little to release the snubber, and I will more than likely have to remove the brake to install the new one to prevent damage.

Thanks, I will let you know. I gonna try the screw method and if it doesn't work I will let you know. It is probably not the easiest method, but I am willing to try it to save a few bucks. I mainly do Whirlpools, Kenmores, and GE washers and Dryers, not a lot Maytags, if I do or will do in the future I need to buy one anyways. I definetly need to buy a spanner wrench though.

Back during the aftermath of hurricane katrina I used that tool to break loose the brake packages on a lot of them maytags that were flooded. The seawater made the brakes stick like they were gorilla glued. I would put the tool on there and depending on how long they had been sitting up the louder the pop. I kid you not. Once I got the brake lubed up with motor oil, I could get a lot of em going. But the bearings would roar like hell in spin. Some of these maytags were high dollar ones.

Yeah, most of the ones I get have a bad bearing and seal, but I never replace them, not cost efficient after time and parts cost, I wouldn't make much profit after resale. I just save the good parts for the next one.

So whats the part # for the brake removal tool again? I am finally getting around to repair this thing. I have two of them that need it and I am sure I will have more in the future so it is best I order the tool. Thanks
