Do not have documentation and need it

The GE refrigerator, TFX20JR, in our rented apartment is working OK but we were not given any documentation and the managment office can not find any. They know nothing about it. It has water and ice on the outside of the door but we do not see any way to change a filter. We can't even see how the water gets into the door dispenser. Does anyone know where we can find the documentation?

Look under the  plastic kick panel on the bottom front. It will be in an envelope tucked under the cabinet, possibly off to one side.

You could add an external filter ...

Looking for a filter was the main reason I wanted the documentation. Do you know where we would add one? Would it be under the sink where the line comes in or behind the fridge? Or someplace else? I researched water filters once and got so confused by the huge variety and words I didn't understand that I just gave up. Thanks!

An in-line filter would be an excellent choice. All you do is cut the line and add the filter. Compression fittings are included.

Do you have a brand you recommend?
Do inline filters have a way to be changed easily?

Supco makes an excellent inline filter. You simply remove the compresstion fittings to change the filter. i think they is good for 1000 gallions of water before replacement. Make a nice clean even cut and slide the compression nuts on either end, then slide the compression rings on each end. Then ease that old filter up to the ends and tighten em up snug. Then turn on the water. Ifn ya sees a drip, snug it up some more till them fittings is all propah. Pwease excuse the typin. i said i cud fix stuff, not type.  8)

turn the water off first   :P
other than that he explained it well, and he did say to turn the water back on after, so i guess it was implied the water should be off, but.... just incase

Typing excused if you excuse my total ignorance of home repair.

Yes, I do know to turn the water off, if not much else. We've had enough leaks and clogs that required that step. But thanks for the reminder anyway. I can use all the help I can get.

Ok, I found Supco.com with a good description of a filter ... two actually with one for 1000 gal and one for 4000 gal but so far I have not found prices or where to purchase.

I don't think they sell directly to consumer.
If you going to order one online just use the link AJ posted.

I checked out the link and it looks like tons of stuff. I see the filter goes on the back of the fridge. I'm not supposed to mess with the appliances but the maintenance staff here would install it if I purchased it. I found "inline ice maker" filters. Is that what I need? I have both an ice maker and the water dispenser on the outside of the fridge door. I assume they are both fed by the same line going in.

Yes any inline water filter will work just fine.

Ok, everyone, you have been most helpful! I think I have the info I need for now. I'll be out of town for 2 weeks visiting my daughter and grandson in Kansas. When I return, I will pursue ordering a filter and take a stab at getting it installed. Thanks so much! I am so tired of buying filtered water when here sits this fridge with a water tap on the door.
