Whirlpool direct drive washer won't spin
« on: June 28, 2009, 08:48:34 PM »
I am having the same problem that my Whirlpool washer will not spin.  My question is how do I know for certain that the clutch is bad?  I took the washer apart and found the clutch pads were not seated properly in the housing. After reseating the pads I put the washer back together and it spun with not problems, however, when I stopped it and tried restarting it it would not spin again. Took it apart again and found the same thing as before the the clutch pads not seated again.  Just for my own info I tried it again with the same results.  Does this sound like the clutch?  Thanks

Is the clutch all oily?
Is the washer noisy when it spins or when it stops?

Not very noisy at all, the "usual" noises.  There was a little oil inside if the clutch.

There should be no oil inside the clutch.

If there is any age on this washer and there is not a puddle of oil on the floor from the gear box I would just replace the clutch.

Thank you very much. So I will replace the clutch.  Is there a seal I should replace on the transmission while I have it open?

Here is the seal that goes around the shaft on top of the gear box.

Unless you can see that the oil is coming from around that shaft seal I would not worry to much about a little oil.

I have never replaced one of them seals myself, but I know JW has. Maybe he can add something to the topic, but I believe you will have to open the gear box up to replace that seal.

Here are some photo of the gear box if you would like to see inside one. :)

Your fast, :)

Lift that washer that sits on top the clutch up and off the shaft.
Then remove the "C" clip that holds the clutch down on the gear box.
Once the "C" clip has been removed you can lift the clutch up and off the gear box.

Then post another photo of the top of the gear box were the shaft is.
From what I can see in the photos you posted it does not look all the oily.

Lets see what the top of the gear box looks like without the clutch on it.

From looking at that photo I would put a new clutch on and give it a try.
If the clutch has been slipping and jumping out it needs to be replaced anyway.

Put the new clutch on and you should be able to quickly tell if that alone repairs the problem.

You sure won't do any damage to the new clutch by trying it a time or two, but I think all your going to need on this one is the clutch.

Not that the motor coupler is causing any of the problems, but it's something you should look at for wear and tear.

Often times if the clutch needs to be replaced I also find a lot of wear and tear on the black rubber part of the motor coupler.
