Maytag Atlantis won't do anything but make a buzzing sound

The washing machine is about five years old with no previous problems.  Two days ago it stopped mid cycle (the tub was full of water).  When I walked into the laundry room I smelled something hot with a bit of an electric smell to it.  When I pushed the start button, I heard a buzzing sound (I checked and its coming from the motor) but nothing else happened.  I drained the water and tilted the machine over and checked the belt, when I pulled the belt the motor turned and the transmission turned as well.  

I suspect that the motor is bad, but I just don't know for sure.  Any help would be appreciated.

Try running the washer with the belt off. if the motor does ok then take a close look at the pump. It may be locking up. A common problem on these washer.

Thanks for the tip, when I tried that nothing turned on the motor (still making the loud buzzing noise though) and I did notice some smoke coming from the motor this time.

Here is a brief description of the problem.

The machine will fill with water correctly, when the water flow stops there will be a humming sound for several seconds,  then the breaker switch for the room is thrown.

What is the cause of this problem?

This washer is pretty tough. It would be better to replace the motor than get another. It ain't no wiring to do. Motor is costly though. Not a bad washer to repair as opposed to the crappiness out there for sale now. My opinion.

I don't think replacing the motor will be too difficult, I have a repair manual for it.  What do you think could have caused the motor to go out?
