Whirlpool Dishwasher - Does not pump the water out.

(1/1)

AJ:
Model Number: DU980QPDB2

Complaint: The dishwasher does not pump the water out. Use to be able to run the drain cycle twice and get the water all drained out, but now it does not drain at all.

When I got to the house the dishwasher was still full of water. I pushed the cancel /drain button.
I could hear the water pump running, but could not hear any water running down the kitchen sink drain.

If the drain motor runs, but the dishwasher does not drain the water out this is often a sign that there maybe a restriction someplace in the dishwasher drain hose. I removed the dishwasher drain hose from under the sink and held it in a large bucket so I could see if any water come out during the drain cycle.

With the drain hose in the bucket I pushed the cancel/drain cycle again. A could see a little water was draining out of the hose this time. The dishwasher drain cycle is timed so if there is a restriction in the drain hose all the water may not get drained out before the end of the cycle.

I knew there was a restriction someplace in the drain line now. After running the dishwasher through the drain cycle about five times I had all the water drained out of the dishwasher. Now it was time to pull the drain hose off and look for that restriction.

On this model there is a check valve the screws into the bottom of the pump and then the drain hose connects to it. This check valve acts as a bottleneck because of it's size. I often find seeds, glass, toothpicks, ect.. in the check valve and this time was no different.

Once I removed the check valve it was easy to see what the problem was. I cleaned the check valve out and put things back together. Filled the dishwasher up with water and pushed the cancel /drain button. This time the dishwasher had no trouble getting all the water pumped out before the end of the cycle.
