Whirlpool Gas Dryer
« on: June 11, 2009, 01:09:05 AM »
My dryer will work fine sometimes and other times when you try to start it it just makes a loud buzzing sound. then you let it sit and it will start sometimes. Once it starts it will only work for that one cycle and then wont start for new load. Door switch seems OK and timer is clicking like its working. What is my issue or what can i test to find issue? Thanks

Model LG5701XKW0

Hi,

What is the model number of your dryer?
The model number can be found on the model/serial number tag on the dryer, maybe inside the dryer door.

Sounds like the motor is on the way out, part # 279827
When it won't start do you hear a buzzing noise when you hit the start button? If you do it's probably new motor time.

Yes it does. cant I push start it to see if it works then it would be the motor? Is it worth replacing it? how hard is it to do?
Thanks

Yes it's the motor. To change them is reletively easy however sometimes it is quite difficult to remove the blower wheel without damaging it. It all depends how old the dryer is whether it is worth fixing. Most people usually get a new dryer.

The bearings in the motor are probably dry and in need of oil. I use zoomspout oil to oil the motor. You must drill some holes in the wells though because they don't provide any. In these hard times a $2 bottle of oil beats a $100 motor.

WD 40 is flammable Do not use it. Use non flammable HVAC approved Zoomoil. any ace hardware has a bottle for $3

I use a 1/8th inch drill bit and I am careful not to go too deep. Dont want to hit the shaft. The zoom oil telescoping spout will fit just right in  the hole. Fill up the cotten wells on both sides of the motor and work the motor with your hand to free it up the stiffness. I mix in a little bit of rust buster too! That will really get it loose.
