Rheem A/C not turning on, burning smell
« on: April 28, 2015, 12:38:31 AM »
I have no idea what I'm doing.

I have a 1975 Rheem furnace model number 3204-80J0. It was 92 today, so I clicked the a/c on and the outside unit didn't turn on. The fan came on high speed as usual inside. So I went outside to check the unit and the fuses were good. Getting 240v to the contactor (?). So I went inside to investigate and there was a burning smell coming from the furnace. I killed power to it and pulled the panels off to find a transformer on the left side super hot. I'm guessing it's a step down transformer? Is this thing replaceable? I can't find a worrying diagram anywhere so I'm lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Low yes step down 110v-24v  I would guess a high resistance short in the control wiring to the compressor contactor. disconnect 24v wires at both ends and check for continuity

I forgot to update this.... I had a friend thats worked on HVAC come over and he said what you said. I replaced the fan control which includes relay and transformer. Found out after I installed the new one that the contactor on the outside condensing unit is fried (0 ohms across coil). So I have that on order and will be replacing it today.

Thanks for the help! :)
