GE lack of agitation

The agitator, (and shaft) have 90 degrees of freedom, and often don't get connected during the agitation cycle.  Is this most likely to be mechanical, or electrical, and how do I get started trouble shooting it.  (or should I skip that part, and just shoot it?)  It is about three years old, and was used for two years, then spent a year in storage.  It worked a few times before acting up, and refusing to agitate.  (It makes a loud clicking noise when it as malfunctioning)

The first thing I would check is the agitator coupling. The agitator pushes down on top of it and the splines sometimes strip. If the coupling is Ok then I think you probably have a bad transmission.
