There's (4) thermal devices...

# 6 Thermal Cutoff 309F or 325F
# 15 Hi Limit Thermostat 250F
# 23 Thermal Fuse 196F would cause the motor not to run.
# 24 Operating Thermostat 150F or 155F (4) wires

depending on which one went bad, another one may be bad also.

using a lighter isn't a good idea = about 1500 F

The Thermal Cutoff 325 F is a one-time fuse.

(was it good before you tested it ?)

If the Thermal Cutoff 325 F opened when in the dryer, then the
Operating t'stat & the Hi Limit t'stat wern't doing their job.

No, the high limit was bad before i took it out,no continuity on it at all. I never put a lighter on it.
The thermostat number 15 on your little diagram is the one i put a lighter on to check it . What is the best means of checking those anyways?

maybe in an oven if you can set the oven temp at about +25F over the limit...

although they may work when you test them, will they work everytime ?

The 155F & the 250F should have opened before the 325F had a chance to blow.

Also make sure your heater element didn't sag and get mid-shorted to ground, that would continue to heat after the thermostats shut off.

With dryer un-plugged:
Measure resistance from heater to ground.

if you really wanna test a therm for its cutout temp about the best way is an electric frying pan with a tiny bit of water, temp is controled and you can get at the terminals easily

by the way that limit that always blows on top of the heat element can be reset. If you slam it on the floor one or 2 times it will be manually reset.

Man you saved me from buying a new thermo kit.  I had a open thermal cut off and did what you said, I slammed it on the floor a couple times and now it works again.  Best $5.00 I ever spent for subscribing to this forum.
