kenmore (ge) dishwarsher fills with dirty water when not in use

my dishwarsher fills with smelly water when not in use how can i check if the garbage disposal is draining back into it or if there is a leak inside of the dishwarsher and the water just stinks cuz its old?

I think you supposed to have a loop in the dishwasher drain hose to prevent that. That hose should be in a loop, with the top of the loop above the ends of the hose. The top of the loop needs to be higher than the point where the hose connects to the sink drain. The idea here is to prevent waste water from flowing back into the dishwasher.

• Dishwasher must be connected to waste line with an air gap (not supplied)
or 32" minimum, high drain loop depending on local codes and ordinances
to prevent back flow into the dishwasher.

• Air gap must be used if waste tee or disposer connection is
less than 18 inches above floor to prevent siphoning.
