Maytag Performa bad motor or transmission?

The washer stoped in mid cycle and the control panel would buzz every four minutes.  I smelled something like an old motor / wiring smell (over heating)  I shut it off, waited 15 min and turned it back on, I heard something shutter trying to start but nothing.  Left it shut off four a week with clothes and water still in the washer.  Prayed turned it on, it took a couple of seconds and came on from the spin cycle finished and shut off.  The smell was coming back but not as strong.   motor or transmission???

That's an easy one...tip the machine back far enough to remove the single belt from the bottom. If you cannot turn the  center drive pulley, the tranny is bad. If the pump is locked up, the motor will not turn either, so check them both before you condemn the motor.

More than likely it's a bad motor from your description of the events. Please post the model umber so we can help you with parts if necessary.

It might just be a bad belt.But check to see ifn dat ole pump is locked up. A common probo wif maytag.

Where do i find the model number?  I looked all over the outside, under the lid and uncliped the top leaned it back to look inside.

It's on the top left edge of the control panel, almost on the back side.
