Maytag Washer - Fills with water, then does nothing...
« on: January 08, 2008, 12:21:42 PM »
Complaint: The washer will fill up with water and then shut off.

This is a older style Maytag washer. One of the good old dependable drive machines.
I know that these washers will not agitate or spin with the lid open. So I opened and closed the washer lid to listen for the clicking sound of a working switch.

I could hear the switch clicking on and off. At first I thought the switch was ok, but then I remembered that this style maytag has two switches in the lid switch assembly.

So I removed the two screws on top the washer above the timer and took a look behind the control panel. I could see that the plunger on one of the switches was broken.

I replaced the lid switch assembly and tested the washer again. This time the washer would agitate and spin just fine.  O0

I have this same model but still need help. The switch with the fuse looked OK, I haven't made it to the one inder the lid as of yet. When I plugged the unit up with the motor showing, I hear a light buzz noise. If it is not one of the switches, what could it be. It was working great then just died with water in it?

Hi,

So your washer will fill with water and then just sit there making a humming sound?

I wonder if the drive belt feel off. The motor maybe running without a belt on it so the only thing that is turning is the motor.

Tip the washer towards the back and look under the bottom of it.

Do you see the belts? Are they both on there or is one on the floor?

I will check on the belts tonight. I do know when I had the front off the unit, there was no belt hanging or on the bottom. It was actually real clean inside the unit. The noise is a very light light buzz, you can barely hear it if you stick your head inside.

Your belts should be on the very bottom of the washer.
A lot like the ones in this video.

Got it, I didn't lift it up. I will take care of this tonight and let you know tomorrow. Thanks a million, this will save me so much for I have a big family and having to buy a new one would be tough.

Thanks and have a great day

OK, I removed the switch and the buzzing noice was a little louder. I was unable to check the switch due to the fact the kids messed up my probes from the meter. The belts were fine that I could see.
My question now is, do you have to have the water lines hooked up in order to test the machine. Didn't know if there was a censor there on the intake or not.

Yes, you need water lines connected and turned on to test the washer.

The washer will spin without the water lines connected, but it will not agitate unit the water level you have set is reached.

The buzzing noise you hear may just be the water valve being energized trying to fill the washer with water.
