Calypso washer that I cannot figure out
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:49:15 AM »
My junk Kenmore Model 110.21082000 (whirlpool) Calypso gave me the LD error 1 week ago (long drain). I took off the pump and noticed hair wrapped around the impeller and it looked like the teeth were stripped out of the top of it. I read online that they came out with a new design of pump and motor. I ordered it up and just installed it.

I began the cycle and the washer filled. As soon as it was supposed to nutate, nothing happened. I got the CE error (communications error). I reset and retried and got the LD error back.

So, I entered diagnostics mode and ran tests. I cannot get this thing to nutate. Since it won't enter that part of the cycle it won't recirculate. From the tests it seems that the pump is working. It just won't nutate or spin. I have it tipped back working underneath it and the overfill error pops up, I am assuming that is because I have it tipped.

Where should I start? I don't want to buy a motor now and have 2-300 into this POS or motor control board. Should I tear into the circuit board and test continuinty? I wonder why I fixed one problem only to have another problem form while I was fixing it.

Did you replace the panels to re-set the panel switches before you tried to run the machine?

^ The only panel I removed was the rear access panel and the bottom access panel. The bottom one has a lip in the back that looks to connect to a horizontal rod.. I could not get it on that rod for the life of me so I just screwed it on. I see no wires going to the rod in the back (its seems to connect the rear feet).

Reset panel switches? I don't know how to do that.. I assumed having it unplugged was good enough.

You did it the hard way. Lord knows what is screwed up now.
Remember, if it is hard to do, you are probably doing it wrong.

I don't know what I did the hard way. I took the old pump off and put the New Pump on.

I am assuming the bottom metal sheet that goes across the entire unit does not affect its operation.

I am a designer.. I didn't screw anything up.

I am going to go tinker with it one more time.

I looked at new washers tonight. This calypso is a money pit.

If I can't fix it tonight.. I am buying a new front loader. Got it narrowed down to either a bosch or fridgidair

Gonna trade one piece o' crap for a different one, eh? Wait till you try to get Bosch repair parts :)

Just because Sears talked you into that pile of junk is no excuse to make another mistake in judgement. Stick with Whirlpool or even Electrolux if you intend to get a front loader. Sometimes you cannot look at things with your designer's flair...there is also a practical aspect to every product, and repairs are certainly an important consideration down the road.

Oh, and your Calypso has a bad Motor Controller.

I was just looking at the bosch because they had a screamin deal on it. I looked it up online and most of the time it gets 2/5 rating.. no thanks.

They also have this and I think I am going to get it
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02637052000P

That is rated great on another washer review site and its customer reviews also get 4.5/5

My end price is 679 with a 5 year "bumper to bumper" warranty from the place (appliance dealer). 550 if I don't want the warranty.

Part out the calypso and list the parts on ebay.

Were did you buy the new pump? Maybe they will let you return it.

Looks like we have a new board in the forums.

Just the facts, ma'am

^ I got the pump on ebay new from some seller (non-dealer).

I won't ask him to take it back. He didn't do anything wrong. Its on me. I will just list it on ebay (as much as I hate ebay now with the huge seller fees and MUST use paypal now).

If you want a real nice machine for a decent price, Lowe's has a Roper for about $300 bucks.
