Urgent washer question
« on: May 16, 2009, 12:14:15 PM »
Hello,
Are there pictures or videos available for how to temporarily repair a broken lid switch in order to drain a washer?  Cannot afford repair service or part.  The part that is pressed down on by the lid has now broken off.  How does one wire it so it will drain?  Thank you.

Flip up the control panel and yank out the lid switch disconnect. The male plug attached to the harness will have 3 wires. One of them is green and tied to the cabinet, Do not bother it. Jump the other 2 wires together or use a piece of romex to make the jumper and that will bypass the broken lidswitch. Do not leave it this way if you have retarded folk around that would try to yank the clothes out the washer while it is spinning full blast.

Thanks for your answer.  It is a washer/dryer combination.  The lid switch assembly is an older one, brown box (the button appears to be stuck), red and white actuator (the part the lid should strike is broken off).  I tried taping the button down to see if it would work but it hasn't yet.  I don't have any way to get romex, can I strip any other type of wire, telephone, etc., to make a jumper?  Do I use the wires that are going into the switch itself, or the ones in the front of the washer that are in plastic to put together?  There are two areas, one in the front and in the back of the washer where the wires are in plastic.  Still need to get it to drain somehow.  Thanks again.

Remove the screws in the lid area that hold the lid switch in place. Pull the wires out so that you can see them. Cut them and jump them together with a wire nut.

Thanks for the help!  Removed the actuator and cherry switch, disconnected wires that are in plastic from cherry switch terminals.  There is nothing around but telephone wire to use as a jump wire, is that safe?  Have no way to get wire nut to use if wires are cut, is there another way to secure them?  Can't afford parts or repair service unfortunately, the help is greatly appreciated.

No it is not safe. The switch is a safety device and it's never safe to jump it out.

Yes, that is understood, the washer needs to be drained, there won't be any problem about opening the washer lid while it is spinning if that is a concern.  That is not going to happen, the off button will be used.  There is some extension cord wire around if that is workable.  This is an emergency.  So it is better then to cut the wires without a wire nut and connect them together?    Thanks.

How dangerous is it?  Several people have said it is an ok temporary fix, the switch only stops the washer when the lid is raised.  Thanks.

Thanks for the information, be totally assured that will not happen.  The machine will be monitored and completely turned off before the lid is lifted.  Are there any other safety issues?  Thanks.

Can any type of wire be used as jump wire for lid switch wires if there is no way to buy romex, etc.  Can old extension cord, telephone wire be stripped and used?  It is an old cherry type lid switch assembly.  The part the lid strikes is broken off.  Thanks.

Please tell us what part you need to correctly repair this washer.

Do you need part #
359807, Lid switch actuator?

or do you need part # 279347, Lid switch?

I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but only trying to help.

Hello,
Thank you, your help is definitely appreciated!  The parts in the photo look similar but different colors, etc.  Since it has been awhile since the washer has worked, I tried something that got it to drain at least, thanks to everyone's expert advice here.  The washer also has some problems with agitating, it will only fast agitate, normal agitating happens once in a blue moon.  It looks like the whole thing is going to need to be replaced eventually, I would feel bad about going too far out of the way getting a lot of new parts until it's known how much time it has left.  You all are the BEST anywhere!  Thanks again!
