Should I get it Fixed
« on: April 25, 2009, 08:28:04 PM »
First time poster...
Maytag Side by Side (11 yrs old).  Woke up to "soggy" frozen waffles...realized the fridge was not running AT ALL.  Power is good (the on the door water works) but no fan/compressor or any sound at all from behind.  Took the lower back panel off...unplug replug, move therm from OFF to COOLDEST...just get not response at all.

Any ideas? Is this something that would be reasonable to get fixed in an 11yr old fridge!?!

Thanks in advance for your advice - John

Hi John;

Yes, it's probably worth fixing, simply because it is probably a blown Defrost Board or a bad temp control. Both parts are located under the top control panel. There's a servce manual around here someplace to show you how to remove the control panel and  damper housing. It has to be completely removed and unplugged to check the ADC board and the temp control, which naturally were mounted in the far right corner :)

Either part costs  less than $100.  so I consider this a very good investment. My 2 cents is on the temp control, but if it were my box, I'd change both while I was in there. Maytag's biggest failure on these (besides the Embraco compressor relay) was the Adaptive Defrost board failure.

Thanks Repair-Man and Al,
You guys are GREAT!!

I ordered a Temp Controler and a new Defrost board....Unfortunately my wife also ordered a new Stainless Steel Kenmore.  Hopefully I can fix the Maytag use it as the backup family fridge and the PRIMARY Beer Fridge.

I got the control assembly out of the Maytag this evening and the defrost board had what looked like a burn mark on the bottom and some scorching on the plastic housing...guess that may be the problem.

- John  (I'll post again and let you know how the repair goes)

Now 'Trout, you know I only get sore if there are a bunch of wild-azzed guesses being thrown in there after I have already diagnosed the issue :)

Just 'cause I got there first is no sign that the rest of you don't have good advice too.  Hey, I leave you guys alone if you get  involved with a reader...it's just common courtesy.
