replaced the motor coupler, Kenmore 80 washer, cant get the motor back on

We have taken out and replaced the motor coupler but we cant get the motor to snap back onto the black plate. We can only get 3 of the 4 little black rubber knobs to line up. We can get either the top brace back on OR the bottom, both are really tight fits to snap.
I have tried a block of wood and a screwdriver to try to snap it over, but that only moves the washdrum around, and of course that moves the little rubber knobs all out of whack..
Also, unaligned I can move the shaft if it ever does get on its braces should I still be able to move the shaft that turns the motor coupler with my fingers, we have been using being able to turn it as a guide to having this thing lined up correctly... should we be able to move it when done correctly?
Anyone have a trick? These braces have taken us well, about 2 hours so far.

This is what I do to get the braces on.
Line up the coupler holes. Then with the bottom brace already in the plate slant the motor down a little towards the bottom clip.

Clip the bottom clip in place and then lift the motor up so it's against the mount plate.

You should now have the motor in place with the coupler lined up and the bottom clip on.

Now all you have left is the top brace. Slip the top brace above the motor and connect it to the mounting plate.

If you can't push the brace down onto the front of the motor use a pliers to squeeze it in place.

When I can't get it lined up right and want to throw my hands up in the air in dispair I simply lay the washer on its back on the floor and then I can kinda let mother nature help me. I place the end piece on the  transmission and turn it to make sure it aint binding, then I put the middle piece on there. I put the endpiece on the motor and make sure it ain't binding. I make sure all my motor mounts are in place and I gently let my motor kinda drop into place. I snap it together and pray.

I could turn the shaft with my pliers once both clamps were on.
we have drain and spin!!!
OR at least we did... oh, oh, it is making a terrible sqeeking sound and a uhur,,uhur and smells a little of rubber.

You may want to check the coupler again.
Make sure it's on there straight and not to far back on the shaft.
The end of the shaft should be flush with the coupler on both the motor side and the transmission side.

I am about to start this whole process again. I hope I haven't broken my motor coupler, the one I took out was indeed broken so I know how it should and shouldn't look when I get back in there...
after I 'fixed' it agitated fine, it drained okay, then it went through the spin and stopped normally.
  
I thought it was fixed so I filled it to run a load, it filled and then during the wash cycle it made a high pitched squeal that didn't stop no matter what cycle I turned it to.
I shut it off.. I am afraid to try to get it to drain now.

Before I 'fixed' it it made more of a clanky squeak but wouldn't drain or spin. and like I said, the motor coupler was definitely broke.

Could I have busted something else during this process of changing the motor coupler...

I'm going to undo and redo what I already did, maybe something is clamped but not really aligned. I am hoping I didn't just break my new motor coupler.

I am a little worried about the smell of burning rubber. I used a paintbrush to dust away clumps of fuzz I vacuumed it away as best I could, would that smell like burning rubber on the motor?

I not only saw the ApplianceJunk Motor Coupler .pdf  I used it!!
I was thrilled at how simple it made taking my washer apart I was able to confidently open her up and went right to the problem. It only took us about 15 minutes. The pictures were great and the instructions were right on.

My trouble started with getting the motor back on, I know these things are made so they only go one way and that is the right way...
but after a couple of hours I may have been a little too forceful.
I kept saying... if the clamp goes on, it'll line it's own self up...
frustration alone made that baby snap on. 
Everything else went back on smoothly, I thought.
I think I got it on wrong/crooked and need to use a little less brutality
and a little more sweet talk.
and a prayer that I didn't misalign something more frustrating by running it with a bad alignment after I 'fixed' it.

I am just a little ol gramma, my 30 year old daughter was helping me today and with your help, your great instructions and the pdf we REALLY DO have a working washer again.
It turned out to be just as I expected, I wasn't careful to make sure the motor was aligned properly.
Since my last post we have successfully torn it down once more and put it back properly and she is now half through the load. No noise, no rattle, even smoother than before.
This time I did as I was instructed 1st by actually disconnecting the wire harness from the motor, that sure made a world of difference in maneuverability, and I did have to use a socket to lightly tap until both shafts were flush this made all the difference in getting the right fit to get the clamp on. It darn near slapped it's own self together.
I used the pliers to snap the top clamp to the motor.

You people R O C K thanks to you one less washer met the recycle... and some parts plant gets to build another motor coupler. The ladies at the parts store were pretty cool too.

I had the same problem as Freda, a smell after I replaced the coupler. First it squealed and I could smell rubber burning. so I stopped it. I tried it again, the squeal stopped, but I still have a slight smell when it spins.

You have the coupler binding. The end pieces should be flush with the shaft but not BINDING to the motor or tranny. Been there Done that.

So the coupler should go on as a complete unit, correct?? I put it on the clutch unit, then slipped the motor on top and into it. I was able to turn the upper shaft of the motor with a pliers when it was all together.
