leaky,stinky washer

Kenmore washer wouldn't spin, broken coupler. Replaced that and started machine to run through a cycle. It seems to run fine, sounds kinda different but it had an AWFUL rubber burning smell for a while. Not as bad now as it was. Also there is now a water leak. It seems to be in the area of the pump although haven't removed the cabinet yet to check for sure. Is the best bet replace the pump and why did it start leaking when it was fine before? Was it just from being bumped around during the coupler fix??
Do I need to do anything about the rubber burning smell or is it just normal since the part is new?

The burning smell may have resulted from tapping the  coupler too far onto the shaft of the motor  or tranny. This causes the back side of the coupler to rub against the motor or the drive lug of the transmission. The odor gradually dissipates as the affected area wears away and the motor is not under duress due to binding.

The pump leak is purely coincidental, but  could have resulted when it was disconnected from the motor during the repair. If you did not disconnect the pump, but rather dropped the motor & pump as one unit, then it could have been bumped as you said, causing the seal to leak. Go ahead and replace the pump.
